Anchovies, small saltwater fish from the Engraulidae family, are emerging as a valuable dietary addition for pets. Typically 4 to 10 inches long with shiny silver-green skin, they are distinct from sardines and renowned for their rich, savory flavor. A significant advantage is their short lifespan, which minimizes the accumulation of toxins like mercury, making them a safer fish option compared to larger species like tuna for supplementing a pet's diet.

The primary health benefits of anchovies stem from their exceptional concentration of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, which are highly bioavailable for animals. These essential fats are crucial for managing inflammation, aiding conditions such as canine allergic dermatitis and osteoarthritis, and significantly improving skin and coat health.
