Leptospirosis in Dogs: Risks, Symptoms, and Prevention

Leptospirosis, often called “lepto,” is a serious bacterial infection caused by spiral-shaped Leptospira bacteria, thriving in warm, stagnant water, muddy soil, and areas contaminated by wildlife urine. This zoonotic disease affects dogs' kidneys, liver, lungs, and nervous system, and can spread to humans. Dogs become infected through contact with contaminated environments, such as drinking from puddles, swimming in streams, or via cuts and mucous membranes exposed to infected soil or water. Wildlife like rats, raccoons, skunks, and opossums are common carriers, making both rural and urban areas potential risk zones.

Symptoms are highly variable and can mimic other illnesses, making early detection challenging. Initial signs include fever, shivering, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and joint pain. While conventional medicine is primary, some owners explore homeopathic remedies like Aconitum napellus for shock or Arsenicum album for digestive upset, always under holistic veterinary guidance. Prevention is key: avoid stagnant water, control rodents, practice good hygiene (using gloves when cleaning), keep dogs leashed in risky areas, and consider vaccination.
