Understanding Dog Hiccups: Causes, Cures, and Prevention

Puppies, and sometimes adult dogs, experience hiccups due to involuntary spasms of the diaphragm, the muscle separating the chest and abdomen. These episodes are normal for puppies, often starting in the womb, and are thought to help exercise their developing respiratory system. Healthy pups may hiccup frequently for seconds to minutes, typically outgrowing this stage, with most adult dogs rarely affected.

Hiccups commonly occur after eating or drinking, especially in “gulpers” who swallow air, or when dogs are excited, nervous, or barking excessively. While usually harmless, hiccups lasting over a few hours can indicate serious underlying issues like respiratory defects, pneumonia, asthma, pericarditis, or heat stroke, warranting immediate veterinary attention.

To alleviate hiccups, offer a small drink of water (avoiding solid food to prevent choking). Distracting the dog with a toy or game, providing a gentle chest massage to relax the diaphragm, or altering their activity level (e.g., slowing down during play, speeding up during a walk) can also be effective.

Prevention involves identifying and avoiding triggers. A species-appropriate, fresh food diet low in grains and starches is recommended, as grain-based foods may be linked to hiccups. Ensuring access to clean, filtered water is also crucial. For dogs that gulp food, strategies include offering smaller, more frequent meals, using puzzle feeders, slow feeder bowls, or portion pacers to encourage slower consumption, or incorporating obedience training during mealtimes.
