Free Health Checks for Hundreds of Service Dogs

MedVet Cincinnati, in collaboration with the annual ACVO®/EPICUR Service Animal Volunteer Eye Screening, provided free eye exams and comprehensive health checks to hundreds of service and working animals in May. This initiative, highlighting the importance of maintaining good ocular and overall health for these animals, is a significant contribution to the well-being of service animals and their human partners. The eye exams, conducted by board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists, have been instrumental in preventing potential diseases and ensuring these animals can continue their vital work. Over 86,000 eye exams have been performed through this program over the years. The free health checks on May 18th extended beyond ophthalmology, encompassing cardiology, dentistry, and orthopedics, providing a holistic approach to animal care. To be eligible, service animals needed to be “active working animals” certified through a formal program, encompassing various roles such as guide dogs, hearing assistance dogs, and search and rescue dogs. The event is a testament to the generosity of veterinary professionals and supporters, emphasizing the often-overlooked dedication and expertise involved in providing service animals to those in need. The program underscores the crucial role of service animals in society and the importance of their health in fulfilling their duties.
